It is from working with asbestos. Asbestos is a real fine insulation that was used years ago in the heating business. It was made from fine glass particle and could easily be inhaled if not careful. It would settle in your lungs and cause irritation and in later years cancer.
My father died from mesothelioma in 2006. He worked in heating and a/c and with asbestos in the 1950′s – 1960′s
You can also google this for a more technical explanation. This is how the pulmonary specialist explained it to us.

The cause of mesothelioma is most commonly associated with asbestos fibers entering the lungs. This is what causes the Mesothelioma cancer.
