I read in a local paper about people suffering from mesothelioma and am just being curious. Also I do not quite understand why one has to resort to court if one has this illness.

It’s a rare cancer caused by working with asbestos. Companies didn’t provide information/protective gear to employees working around this stuff, and were placed in danger without their knowledge.

occupational work hazard that supposedly the company knew the risks to employees and they don’t want to pay for med care, or want little payoffs like 250K, which is cheap compared to what the person suffers from, and the treatments/pain/meds/ hosp care, resp care, medical equipment and eventual death. same as tobacco companies, they know the risks, even tell people, and they still smoke. so, really no claims there. some other professions are dangerous to health, nuclear workers, miners, some farming, some people work with dangerous chemicals, biohazards, transport of chemicals, even fuel oils, etc. the mesothelioma claims are being denied to entitled workers and many are told the company is not at fault. I don’t know what the big fuss is, but these class action suits, will try to tie up the court systems for years, sometimes hoping people die and they don’t have to pay the claim , or that people will just give up. some companies don’t have any work ethics and take advantage of people’s hard work and trust and naivety (spelling?)

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is caused by inhaling asbestos fibers. Asbestos is a natural mineral rock which is mined then the fibers from it are woven and added to material. It was discovered for it’s excellent fire-retardant and thermal insulation properties and was widely used in many industries, i.e. to insulate water pipes, and used as a fire retardant in wall cavities and ceilings etc. People who had mined and worked with asbestos over a long period were more supceptible to developing mesothelioma – which can take 10-40 years to develop.
In 1985 it was finally banned from when more and more cases of asbestos -related diseases became more prevelant. People with asbestos-related disease were advised to sue their employers for compensation – hence the reason why they had to appiont a lawyer and attend court.
Approximately – 3.000 people a year still die from mesothelioma and these figures are likely to continue up until 2020.
Asbestos still lurks in thousands of old public buildings today and is still a health hazard.
I have included my website so you can read the facinating facts concerning asbestos.
Kind regards,
Ann.

There is a need to go to court if the mesothelioma was acquired from the irresponsibility of employers or building administrations. For example, if you work for a construction company and there are works involving taking off roofs with asbestos on it. The company should give you proper work gear that would protect you from asbestos exposure. Another example is when you live in an older apartment building and the roof or walls have asbestos. This should have been taken out in the 70s when asbestos was banned.
